Sharing The Love Of Reading

A Family Affair Volume 5, Number 1, Winter 2007

One day Sally Godard stumbled across Libros Para Pueblos’ website and had an idea that would change the lives of more than 100 children in a small village in Mexico. She rallied her friends and family into raising $1500 dollars to open a library in the farming village of San Lucas Tlanichico. They also provided another $1000 dollars to buy furniture. A teacher in the group put together an interchange between the Oaxacan children and her class in the US. Daughter Carey came to Oaxaca for the festive grand opening in June 2007. Great job Sally, friends and family!

Reading Together

Most of the children that use our libraries come from homes where there is no telephone or running water. Many have no electricity. In some villages most of the men are working in the USA. Often the mother does not speak Spanish or know how to read. Our message is:  If your child cannot read, read to him. If you cannot read, encourage your child to read to you. If neither of you can read, look at the pictures and talk about them together.

“Many things we need  can wait. The child cannot. Now is the  time his bones are  formed, his mind developed. To him we cannot say tomorrow, his name is today.”

 Gabriela Mistral
